Historically, African women used Ankara wax print fabrics as a method of communication and expression, with certain patterns being used as a shared language, with widely understood meanings. Over time, the wax prints have began to be used as formal wear by African leaders, diplomats, and the general population. Across Africa, wax prints have different names including batik’, ‘kanga’, ‘chitenge’, ‘African wax print’, ‘Wax Hollandais’, ‘ankara’ in Nigeria and ‘kitenge’ in Uganda.
